Wild Coast Trail
Embark on an unforgettable 7 night, 8 day riding adventure through one of South Africa’s last true wildernesses. The Wild Coast Trail is for seasoned riders who crave more than just a holiday. It’s a full-bodied, soul-stirring journey across untamed beaches, rolling hills and rural heartlands steeped in Xhosa culture.

On arrival at East London Airport, you will be transferred to Kei Mouth Guest Lodge, the base of Wild Coast Horse Trails. A light lunch is served, after which you will change into your riding clothes and head up to the paddock where you’ll meet the horses. A short introductory ride gives you the chance to get to know your horse and blow away some of those travelling cobwebs. A relaxed, friendly evening meal awaits you back at the guesthouse along with a good night’s sleep.

After breakfast, your riding adventure begins with a short ride to the Kei River. Together with your horse, you’ll cross the river by historic ferry into the Old Transkei, where the day unfolds across rocky headlands, forests, rolling hills and long, empty beaches. The ride leads to a hidden waterfall, perfect for a picnic lunch and a refreshing swim if you’d like! In the afternoon, you’ll make your way back along the coast to Seagulls Hotel, where a relaxed beach atmosphere awaits; cold drinks, ocean views and time to unwind. The day ends with a generous dinner and shared stories with your fellow riders.

Wake to the sound of the sea and the solitude of Africa’s edge. After breakfast, a morning ride of around 23 km takes you across rolling hills, rocky outcrops and endless sandy beaches, passing friendly locals and untouched rural settlements. You’ll cross inland rivers, open grasslands and winding paths before returning to the coast and the warm hospitality of Wavecrest Hotel and Spa. Spend the afternoon riding further, relaxing by the pool, enjoying the spa, kayaking or exploring the waves of the Indian Ocean. As the sun sets, enjoy sundowners with your group followed by a simple, home-cooked dinner.

An early start sets the pace for today’s 35 km ride to the remote Kob Inn. You’ll ride across rivers, rolling hills, open grasslands and winding paths above crashing waves, with chances for exhilarating canters along quiet, sandy beaches. Breakfast is taken “on the hoof” as you soak in the ever-changing Wild Coast scenery.
You’ll arrive at Kob Inn in time for lunch and the afternoon is yours to relax and enjoy the laid-back coastal vibe. With a pub perched on the rocks and sheltered private beaches, it’s the perfect spot to unwind and experience true ‘Africa time’.

After an afternoon of relaxation, you should be fresh and ready for another full day in the saddle. The tides dictate the day’s schedule which will take you about 20 km up the coast along sheltered beaches, past lagoons and hidden coves. Your guide will select a picturesque spot for you to enjoy a saddlebag picnic before heading back to Kob Inn for an evening of delicious dining and maybe a few cocktails!

Time flies as it’s already time to turn around and head back down the coast, riding around 27 km along rivers, hills and beaches to Wavecrest Hotel. The pace will follow the tides again, with plenty of opportunities for exhilarating canters along the way. The afternoon is yours to relax; enjoy a spa treatment, explore the rare mangrove forests by canoe or simply soak in the warm South African coastal hospitality.

Your second to last day is packed with riding, from fast-paced stretches along beaches to winding canters through grasslands and technical sections that test your partnership with your horse. Cross narrow coastal paths, sparkling rivers and rural homesteads where locals wave as you pass, all while taking in the ever-changing vistas of the Wild Coast. After a break at a coastal hotel, continue to the Kei River where the ferry awaits, finishing with a final trot or canter along the beach depending on the tide. Back at the paddocks, your horse will receive some well-earned pampering and a hearty meal. In the evening, savour fresh local seafood at a nearby restaurant, reliving the week’s adventures.

Set off on a spectacular ride, crossing the Great Kei River on the ferry and then along the coastline toward Seagulls Beach Hotel. Take in the sweeping ocean views and enjoy the thrill of riding along the rolling dunes. You arrive at Seagulls in time for a relaxed pub lunch and dip in the pool. During the afternoon there’s time to explore the nearby shoreline, unwind on the beach deck, take in the tranquil surroundings or take an optional ride out in the afternoon.

Today’s ride takes you inland to explore hidden waterfalls and the traditional rural villages of the Eastern Cape. Experience the rich local culture as you ride through scenic landscapes. Enjoy a picturesque picnic lunch before heading back. The rest of the late afternoon is yours to relax; swim in the pool or stroll along the beach in search of seashells.

Depending on the conditions, cross the river mouth on horseback or take the inland route for an equally scenic ride. Arrive at Wavecrest in time for lunch. Spend the afternoon on an optional ride or just soaking in the spectacular views, unwinding in the jacuzzi on the deck or enjoying the pool and spa facilities.

Your journey begins with your arrival at East London Airport, where you’ll be met and transferred to Kei Mouth; the relaxed coastal village that’s home to Wild Coast Horse Trails. After settling in at Kei Mouth Guest House and enjoying a light snack, you’ll change into your riding gear and meet the team. Your first ride is a gentle introduction: an hour or so to ensure you and your horse are perfectly matched. It’s your first chance to breathe in the sea air, dip your toes (and hooves) into the Indian Ocean and canter along the wide, open beaches of the Wild Coast.

Today, the adventure begins in earnest. You’ll set off on a full day in the saddle, weaving between tidal beaches, grassy headlands and winding inland paths. There’s always a chance to spot dolphins playing in the surf as you canter on the beach. A saddlebag picnic lunch gives you time to pause, take in the views and soak up the sun. You’ll arrive in the late afternoon at the tranquil Wavecrest Hotel and Spa: your home for the next two nights- where cold drinks, a warm shower and a hearty dinner await.

Whether you set off along the beach and return inland or begin in the hills and finish with an exhilarating low-tide gallop, the scenery is nothing short of spectacular. Expect rolling green landscapes, rural villages and the pure joy of riding fast along wet, packed sand. After lunch the afternoon is yours to enjoy. Choose from kayaking or a boat trip up the Nxaxo River estuary, a hike through coastal trails or simply unwinding in the hotel’s jacuzzi and spa as the sea breeze drifts in.

This morning, you’ll begin the ride back to Kei Mouth, heading inland through high paths and forest tracks. The ride offers plenty of open stretches for cantering as you wind back toward the coast. A stop for a pub lunch and swim in the pool breaks the day before crossing the Kei River again on the ferry- a Wild Coast icon. On returning to the guesthouse for your final evening on the trail, you will enjoy a seafood dinner at a local restaurant.

Your final morning brings a farewell ride above the cliffs of Morgan Bay, with sweeping sea views and a final canter along the beach. After returning to the guest house, you’ll have time to shower, change and reflect on the journey before your transfer back to the airport. You’ll say goodbye- but we all know that the Wild Coast has a way of calling you back.
