This Zambian horseback safari combines immersive riding in one of Africa’s most unspoiled conservancies with the comfort of luxury and the option to include the iconic highlights of Livingstone and Victoria Falls.
Ride through the vast plains of the Simalaha Community Conservancy: a remote, low-tourism wilderness where wildlife roams freely and horses move safely alongside herds of zebra, wildebeest and giraffe. With no large predators in the area, riding here feels relaxed and expansive, allowing you to truly enjoy the freedom of long canters guided by highly experienced horsemen who know this land intimately. The horses live naturally, roaming freely when not in work, and the entire safari is rooted in responsible, sustainable tourism.
Each safari includes a minimum of three nights of horseback riding in the Simalaha Conservancy, with the freedom to shape the rest of your journey. You can add an extra night in the saddle or extend your stay with one or more nights at Chundukwa River Lodge before or after the riding safari. Staying at the lodge gives you the opportunity to explore the Livingstone area, enjoy a range of activities along the Zambezi River and visit the iconic Victoria Falls - allowing you to balance riding, discovery and relaxation at your own pace.
What to expect?
Zambian Horseback Safaris offers flexible stay options. Each safari begins with a minimum of three nights in the saddle. To make the most of your journey, it’s possible to add one night in the saddle and one or more nights at their lodge near Livingstone: Chundukwa River Lodge. Chundukwa River Lodge is the perfect base to explore Livingstone and the Victoria Falls and unwind before or after your ride. Each itinerary can be tailored to fit your travel plans seamlessly.
Below an example of what the itinerary could look like.
-
Fly into Livingstone Airport. Once you have cleared Immigration and collected your luggage, you will be met by a member of the team and transferred to Chundukwa River Lodge, which is approximately 25mins by road. After checking in and a light lunch on the patio overlooking the river you will hop onboard the lodge boat and embark on a Zambezi Sunset Cruise.

Wake up with the sun from your Zambezi chalet. At a pre-arranged time, you will depart for Zambian Horseback Safaris! Your journey starts with a 40 minute road transfer to a small African harbour called Mambova. Local villagers and fishermen trade their daily catch here and it is a kaleidoscope of colour, noise, children, goats and chickens!
You’ll continue your journey by river. This magical boat journey takes you upstream on Africa's fourth largest river - the mighty Zambezi. This trip is an adventure itself and a highlight for all guests! You can expect to see hippos, crocodiles, local fisherman in their traditional dugouts called mokoros, local cattle grazing on the riverbanks and beautiful, remote village scenes. After two hours on the river, look out for the horses, saddled and waiting on the riverbank. It’s time to ride!

You’ll start each day before dawn at Zambian Horseback Safaris, with a light breakfast and your choice of tea or coffee before heading out into the wilderness. Watching the sunrise from horseback is a daily ritual- and one of the true highlights of the safari.
Each day is spent exploring the vast Simalaha Wilderness, an area of 180,000 km² of raw, open land. Ride across endless plains, through mopane forests and past ancient baobab trees, gently approaching large herds of wildlife. The Zambezi River weaves through the landscape, alongside the lives of the Lozi people, who move their cattle along the riverbeds and fish these waters as they have for generations.

Destination
The Simalaha Reserve, on the southern edge of Zambia along the Zambezi River, covers 180,000 ha (9,900 ac) of untouched wilderness. “Simalaha” (Sim-a-la-ha) means come together- a fitting name for a place where local communities and conservationists unite to protect nature. Since 2012, the Simalaha Community Conservancy, supported by Peace Parks Foundation, has reintroduced over 1,100 animals, including giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and waterbuck, while supporting local livelihoods, education and sustainable tourism.
Home to 22 large mammal species, it’s common to see hundreds of wildebeest, zebra and lechwe grazing alongside local cattle. From ostrich and sable to hippos, Nile crocodiles and buffalo. The rich wildlife and vast, open plains make horseback safaris here an unique opportunity to experience Zambia’s untamed heart.
