This is an unforgettable horseback safari through the spectacular landscapes of South Africa’s Waterberg region. Over eight days, you’ll ride more than 150 kilometres across a 15,000-acre private game reserve and neighbouring conservancies, exploring everything from wide open plains and rolling hills to rocky outcrops, wetlands and dense bush.

The Signature Safari combines exceptional riding with the thrill of encountering African wildlife from horseback. With two riding activities or adventures each day, you’ll experience the reserve from every angle; from long rides and exhilarating canters to splashy water rides, swimming with your horse and even a game of polocrosse. Along the way, there are opportunities to ride alongside wildlife, enjoy a bush breakfast beneath a giant wild fig tree and spend an unforgettable night under canvas overlooking the wilderness.

The safari is designed for confident intermediate and advanced riders who are comfortable spending extended periods in the saddle and riding across varied terrain. With a maximum of just eight guests, the atmosphere is personal and relaxed, while the carefully planned routes ensure that you experience the very best of the reserve and its abundant wildlife.

Looking for more flexibility? The Signature Safari is also available as a tailor-made experience, allowing you to create your own itinerary and choose the activities that best suit your interests and riding level.

What to expect?

Accommodation

The main lodge is a comfortable and welcoming base for your stay, set alongside a beautiful lake with a swimming pool overlooking the water. Accommodation is spread across the lodge grounds, with seven separate double rooms, including three suites with their own small verandahs and views across the lake. Traditional African rondavels are located close to the main lodge, while two additional double rooms are situated inside the main building. All rooms have private en-suite bathrooms with either a shower, bath or both.

The lodge has spacious indoor and outdoor areas where you can relax between rides, including a large verandah overlooking the surroundings. Three meals are served each day, with afternoon tea before the afternoon ride. Drinks are included throughout your stay, and special dietary requirements can be catered for.

Your stay at Camp Davidson offers a completely different experience. Inspired by the historic travelling camps used by E.A. Davidson, the great-grandfather of one of Horizon Horseback’s founding partners, the camp combines a sense of history with the comfort of a luxury safari camp.

Set among the sandstone ridges of the Waterberg, the camp overlooks open valleys where wildlife can often be seen. Beautiful canvas tents are raised on wooden decks and each has its own en-suite bathroom with a shower. The camp is fully powered by solar energy and also has a small swimming pool, making it a wonderful place to relax after a day in the saddle.

Wi-Fi is available at an additional cost and can be arranged for guests who need to stay connected during their stay.

Located on the south-western side of the conservancy, Savannah Lodge gives you the opportunity to explore more of this remote part of the reserve. The lodge has five comfortable double rooms, each with a private en-suite bathroom.

The spacious living and dining areas can be enjoyed both indoors and outside, while a small swimming pool and deck offer a peaceful place to unwind. From here, you can look out across the surrounding plains and a nearby waterhole, where wildlife often comes to drink.
