Looking for a safari that you can shape around your own interests? The Tailor-Made Signature Safari offers a flexible riding holiday where you can choose how you spend your time in the saddle. Whether you want to focus on long rides and wildlife, try something new like polocrosse or swimming with your horse, or combine riding with other activities, the itinerary can be adapted to suit you.

Based at the Signature Safari Lodge, you’ll have the opportunity to explore more than 21,000 acres of private reserve and neighbouring conservancy on horseback. Rides are organised in small groups according to riding ability, with up to two riding activities each day. Longer rides usually take place in the morning, while afternoons are shorter and more relaxed.

With over 100 horses, riders of all abilities and ages can be matched with a suitable horse and enjoy a varied riding experience throughout their stay. This flexibility makes the Tailor-Made Safari particularly well suited to families, groups with different riding levels and riders who simply want to decide what kind of adventure they feel like having each day.

Prefer a set itinerary? If you prefer to have your days planned in advance, the Signature Safari is also available as a 7-night set itinerary, with a carefully planned route through the reserve and conservancy.

What to expect?

One of the best things about this safari is the freedom to make it your own. Rather than following a fixed itinerary, you can choose from a variety of riding experiences and activities throughout your stay, depending on your interests, riding level and the kind of adventure you are looking for.

Each day includes two riding activities. Morning rides are usually the longer rides, lasting around 3–4 hours, while afternoon rides are shorter and generally last 1–2 hours. Rides are organised in small groups according to riding ability, with a maximum of eight riders and usually two guides. This means that experienced riders can enjoy a more active pace, while less experienced riders can take things at a more comfortable speed.

With so many different ways to explore the reserve, no two stays have to be the same. During your stay, you can choose from the following riding experiences:

Accommodation

Horizon Lodge is the main base for your Signature Safari, beautifully set alongside a large lake within the private game reserve. Accommodation is spread across the lodge grounds, with seven separate double rooms, including three suites with views over the lake and their own small verandahs. Traditional African rondavels are located close to the main lodge, while two additional double rooms are situated in the main building. All rooms have private en-suite bathrooms with either a shower, bath or both.

The lodge offers spacious indoor and outdoor areas where you can relax between rides, including a large verandah overlooking the lake and a swimming pool beside the water. Three meals are served each day, with afternoon tea before the afternoon ride. All drinks are included, and special dietary requirements can be catered for.

An overnight stay at Camp Davidson can be added to your safari at an additional cost (min. 4 pax needed). Inspired by the historic travelling camps of E.A. Davidson, the great-grandfather of one of Horizon Horseback’s founding partners, the camp combines a sense of history with the comfort of a luxury safari camp.

Set among the sandstone ridges of the Waterberg, Camp Davidson overlooks open valleys where wildlife can often be spotted. The beautiful canvas tents are raised on wooden decks and each has its own en-suite bathroom with a shower. The camp is fully solar-powered and has a small swimming pool, offering a peaceful place to relax after a day in the saddle.

Wi-Fi is available at an additional cost for guests who wish to stay connected during their stay.

An overnight stay at Savannah Lodge can also be added to your safari at an additional cost (min. 4 pax needed). Located on the south-western side of the conservancy, the lodge gives you the opportunity to spend more time exploring this remote part of the reserve and its abundant wildlife.

The lodge has five comfortable double rooms, each with a private en-suite bathroom. Spacious living and dining areas can be enjoyed both indoors and outside, while a small swimming pool and deck provide a lovely place to relax and take in the surroundings.

The lodge overlooks the surrounding plains and a nearby waterhole, where wildlife often comes to drink. With its peaceful setting and remote location, Savannah Lodge is a wonderful addition for those who would like to explore more of the conservancy during their stay.

Destination

The Waterberg Region is a beautiful and diverse part of South Africa’s Limpopo Province, where wide open plains, rolling hills, sandstone landscapes and African bushveld come together. The region is known for its rich wildlife and remarkable biodiversity, with large areas of protected wilderness providing a home to giraffe, zebra, hippo, buffalo and a wide variety of antelope and bird species.

From horseback, you experience this remarkable wilderness from a completely different perspective. You ride through open plains, dense bush and along quiet waterways, often coming surprisingly close to wildlife in their natural surroundings. The varied terrain offers everything from long canters and splashy rides through the water to scenic trails through the bush and surrounding countryside.

With its combination of beautiful landscapes, abundant wildlife and exceptional riding, the Waterberg Region is a truly special destination for an African horseback adventure.
